Delhi Capitals vs Chennai Super Kings — Match Summary

Another disappointing night for the five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, as they failed to impress their home crowd once again. With three frontline spinners in their ranks, none completed their full quota of overs. Their batting lacked the intent and fight required to chase down the total, and despite MS Dhoni being at the crease for nearly 10 overs, there was little for fans to cheer about. Delhi Capitals dominated from start to finish, sealing a convincing win.

Player of the Match: KL Rahul

_”It’s something I’ve grown used to — adapting to different roles. Initially, I was preparing to open, but a week before the IPL, the coach wanted me at No. 4 due to a senior player’s absence. I just accepted it and focused on enjoying my batting. Today, I was happy to be back at the top.

Mentally, it’s about adapting to different entry points. I have routines to settle in, and moving up and down the order disrupts that. Once I get past the nerves, it’s back to basics — bat and ball.

I started well, got scratchy in the middle, but partnerships with Porel and Axar helped. Even 20 off 7-8 balls can shift momentum — that’s modern T20. Toward the end, the heat got to me and I feel I left 15-20 runs out there. Something to work on.”_  Match -17|DC VS CSK|DC Won The Match|2025

Axar Patel (DC Captain)

_”Honestly, I didn’t expect to start the season with three consecutive wins. Everyone is contributing, and the team balance is strong. We talk about making an impact every game.

I didn’t bowl much today due to a finger injury — didn’t want to risk it with such a long tournament ahead. We’ve had good catches and some drops too. As a captain, I feel we haven’t played a perfect match yet. Momentum is key and can shift quickly in the IPL.”_  Match -17|DC VS CSK|DC Won The Match|2025

Mitchell Starc on the Performance

_”Great all-round performance. We batted well and adapted quickly. The pitch here had more pace than Vizag, and being two-paced helped the bowlers.

Everyone knows my yorker is coming, but if you nail it, it’s still hard to play. In T20s, you can’t be egotistic — gotta think outside the box and stay unpredictable.”_

Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK Captain)

_”Things aren’t going our way. We’re trying to improve, but the results aren’t showing it. The powerplay has been a concern — with both bat and ball, we’re either losing too many wickets or giving away runs.

We’re being too tentative in the powerplay. It’s about being proactive, staying on the front foot. The lack of intent set us back today — we were always playing catch-up. Even when Dube tried to build momentum, it didn’t stick. Credit to DC, they used the conditions really well.”_  Match -17|DC VS CSK|DC Won The Match|2025

CSK’s Powerplay Woes Continue

Conway was added to strengthen their top order, but the powerplay struggles persisted. Ravindra fell early, Gaikwad was undone by a Starc short ball, and Conway’s unconvincing stay ended at the hands of Vipraj Nigam.

By the end of the powerplay, CSK were well behind the game. Dube’s six in the 10th over gave a flicker of hope but he fell the very next ball. Vijay Shankar, despite being dropped four times, top-scored with an unbeaten 69. Dhoni walked in as early as the 11th over — his earliest in a full 20-over IPL game since 2023 — and scored 30* off 36 balls. While their partnership reduced the margin, it never threatened DC’s target.

Delhi Capitals — History Makers

This is only the second time Delhi Capitals have started a season with three wins from three games:

  • 2009
  • 2025

They also broke a long-standing jinx:

  • Hadn’t beaten CSK at this venue since IPL 2010.

Meanwhile, CSK’s form has dipped drastically:

  • Lost three games in a row after winning the season opener.
